The “Chi” in ChiBall comes from one of the central ideas of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Chi (also written Qi) is often translated as “vital energy” or “life force” – the energy that, in TCM, flows through everything in nature, including us.
Where Chi comes from
TCM describes several sources of Chi: the energy we are born with, the energy we take in from food, and the energy we draw in with every breath. That’s why breathing, eating well and moving well are all part of looking after your energy in this tradition.
Chi and the meridians
In TCM, Chi is described as flowing along pathways called meridians, each linked to one of the five elements. Gentle, flowing movement and steady breathing are traditionally used to help Chi move freely – which is exactly what a ChiBall class is designed around.
Chi in a ChiBall class
Every class begins with slow Tai Chi–Qi Gong to wake up the body and the breath, builds through dance, yoga and Pilates, and ends in stillness. The warm, aromatherapy-infused ball in your hands gives you something to focus on, helping your attention settle into the movement.
Everyday ways to look after your energy
- Regular sleep and time outdoors in daylight
- Fresh, seasonal food
- Gentle movement and slow, deep breathing
- Time with people who make you laugh
