Tai Chi, Qi Gong and the ChiBall

Every ChiBall class opens with Tai Chi–Qi Gong. It is the rising yang phase of the class – linked with the Wood element and with Spring – and it sets the tone for everything that follows: slow, mindful and connected to the breath.

Where the movements come from

ChiBall Tai Chi–Qi Gong is inspired by movements from the Tai Chi 24 Yang form and the Qi Gong “Eight Precious Exercises”, adapted so they can be done holding a ChiBall. You’ll meet movements such as Press the Sky, Push the Earth; Pulling the Bow; Wave Arms; Butterfly Arms; and Circle the Sun and Moon.

What it feels like

The movements are slow and continuous, coordinated with an unhurried breath. Many people find this a lovely way to arrive in class – letting the busy day go, warming up gently and tuning in to how the body feels. Holding the soft, aromatic ball gives the hands and the mind a natural focus.
